The uncle behind the engineered public. Freud supplies the premise — a person moved by what he cannot see — that his nephew billed for.12

Freud’s psychoanalysis holds that behaviour is driven by an unconscious the person cannot directly see. His double nephew Edward Bernays — his mother was Freud’s sister, his father the brother of Freud’s wife — took that premise out of the consulting room and sold it to industry as a method for shaping opinion, naming Freud and the unconscious as his basis in Propaganda (1928). The line from the Vienna clinic to the New York account is a bloodline and a bibliography.

Role in the thesis

The documented source of the consent rail’s method, held to what the record supports: Bernays worked off Freud, by kinship and by his own acknowledgment. Freud named no engineered public and ran no campaign; the extension into persuasion is Bernays’s, and it is where the causal weight sits.
