The Ojai Convergence

One California valley where the century’s child-project ran its whole arc — raised to a planned destiny, repudiated, then rebuilt as its opposite.¹²³

Documented core

Ojai is where several strands of the managed-child story sit in one place, and the convergence is documented person by person. The Theosophists brought Krishnamurti to Ojai’s Arya Vihara from 1922, grooming him as the vehicle of the coming World Teacher under Annie Besant and the Order of the Star in the East. In 1929, at Ommen, Krishnamurti dissolved that order himself — “Truth is a pathless land” — repudiating the role a movement had raised him for. He remained at Ojai the rest of his life.

Into that milieu came Aldous Huxley, who settled in Southern California in 1937 and became close to Krishnamurti and to Gerald Heard. In 1946 Huxley and Krishnamurti — with Rosalind Rajagopal and Guido Ferrando — founded the Happy Valley School (now Besant Hill School of Happy Valley) on land Besant’s Theosophical foundation had purchased in 1927: a deliberately anti-conditioning, child-led school, the near-opposite of the World-Teacher grooming that had first drawn the movement to the valley. The same town, within one lifetime, held both the child administered toward a planned end and the child freed to its own will.

Held-open / discard

This is a convergence of documented lives in one place, not a coordinated program. An earlier placeholder shorthand, “Campbell circle,” is dropped: no documented Joseph Campbell tie to the Ojai milieu was located, and none is asserted. The reading that the valley was an engineered convergence — a single hand arranging the World-Teacher project, its collapse, and the school — has no documentary basis and is not drawn; what is documented is that the same disposition (the child as material to be brought to its destined form) surfaced here in both its administering and its liberating idioms.

Role in the thesis

The lifespan rail (map-node 3.3): a place where the double-parentage of the managed child is legible in miniature — grooming toward a planned destiny, its public repudiation, and a liberation-education experiment, all in one valley across one generation. Cited as itself, a documented milieu — never generalized into a design (S-5).
